Sanctioning
Many British Columbia schools travel outside of the province to compete, and also host schools from across Canada, from the United States and from overseas. To ensure that this competition is approved or conducted by secondary school authorities and that it is fair and equitable, sanctioning policies have been developed by all Provincial School Sport Associations in Canada and State Associations in the United States.
BC SCHOOL SPORTS Policies and Procedures with respect to sanctioning of tours (both incoming and outgoing), as well as the required forms, can be downloaded as follows:
- Part I of the BC SCHOOL SPORTS Competitive Rules and Regulations for the Sanctioning of Out-of-Province Competition
- Application for Sanctioning of an Inter-Provincial Athletic Competition
- Application for Sanctioning of an Athletic Competition Involving USA Schools
- Application for Sanctioning of an International Athletic Competition
There may be situations where the rugby jurisdictions outside of Canada either sending a team to, or hosting a team from, British Columbia may require the approval of the BC Rugby Union and/or Rugby Canada. If this is the case, please review the information below, then complete and submit the required documentation as directed.
- Rugby Canada / BCRU Policies and Instructions
- Rugby Canada/ BCRU Tour Out Form
- Rugby Canada/BCRU List of Travellers Form
The forms listed above require the use of Adobe Reader which is a free program that can be downloaded here.
Important Notice to All Senior-Level High School Rugby Coaches
The BC Secondary Schools’ Rugby Union will follow the policy adopted by the BC Rugby Union, and apply all Experimental Law Variations (ELVs) to all school games at the senior level – exhibition, league play, play-offs and Provincial Championship competition. This decision, effective March 2, involves all grades eleven and twelve players, as well as grade ten athletes competing for the first time at the senior level. Coaches are urged to ensure that grade ten players in particular are made aware of these rules, as this coming season is most likely the first time they will play under all of them. A detailed outline of the IRB Experimental Law Variations can be downloaded from the Resources page of this website.
Penticton Pa’Kit Tournament 2009
Another popular event on the spring rugby calendar is the Penticton Pa’ Kit Tournament , which will be held this year from April 9 to 11. The co-ordinator of the event is Ian Butters at Penticton Secondary. More specific information can be found in the four downloads located on the Resources page of this website.
Port Moody Blues Tour to Australia
Early in March, forty players and their coaches will head to Australia for a two week tour. First stop is Sydney, where the group will be hosted by Merrylands High School. They will then make their way north in hopes of honing their rugby skills, while at the same time enjoying some sun and surf. Games have been arranged with the Ballina RUFC, Xavier High School (near Ballina), All Saints Anglican School (Gold Coast) and Ipswich Grammar School (Brisbane). Good luck to you all!
BC Well Represented on the Canada U-20 Tour to New Zealand
Where will you be in 2011? The ‘best of the best’ may be helping Canada prepare for the 2011 U-20 World Championships. This year’s Canada squad has a strong BC flavour. Over half of the players come from our BC Secondary School’s Rugby Union competition, which shows that you are in the best place to achieve your dream.
Meet Two of the 2008 BCSSRU Scholarship Winners
Throughout the 2009 season we will feature past recipients of a BCSSRU Scholarship. The first two athletes profiled are Cameron Ballard from Rockridge and Liam Murray from Collingwood.
Carson Graham Invited to Prestigious Tournament in Japan
The Carson Graham Eagles have once again been invited to compete in the Sanix World Rugby Youth Invitational Tournament which is held every year during the Golden Week holidays (April 29 to May 5) in Fukuoka prefecture, Japan. Participation in this prestigious event is by invitation only, and the overseas schools selected by their respective unions are expected to be among the top five in the country. The event is hosted by the Japan Rugby Football Union and supported by various local bodies. The Global Arena in Munakata, Kyushu, is the venue for this tournament between eight top Japanese and eight top teams from various other countries. The first one was held in 2000. It is a unique competition in world rugby for high schools, and is almost a ‘mini World Cup’. Best wishes for success to coach Tom Larisch and the boys from Carson Graham.
Antipodean Adventure for the Collingwood Cavaliers
A contingent of forty-nine players, five coaches and one physiotherapist will spend their spring vacation period ‘down under’ on Collingwood’s seventh tour to Australia. The West Vancouver school has established long-standing relationships with several schools there, most notably Blue Mountains Grammar and Knox Grammar in Sydney who have hosted them on all previous six tours. The latter is particularly ‘near and dear’ to coaches Dave Speirs and Roger Hatch who each spent a year there on a teaching exchange. In addition, the travelling group will be hosted by Kinross Wolaroi School (Orange NSW) and Central Coast Grammar (north of Sydney) before moving up to Queensland for matches against Somerset College, Mountain Creek State School and Immanuel Lutheran College. Best wishes for a successful tour!
