Challenging Tour to New Zealand for the Canada U-20 Team

Following the U-20 World Cup held in Wales last June, it was apparent that a lack of pre-tournament game experience was a detriment to Canada.  Indeed two opening fixtures, against an Australian side packed with Super 14 players and an eventual finalist England, demonstrated the wide gulf between the top teams and the rest.  Canada did make some rapid adjustments to the pace and power required at the tournament, bouncing back from two heavy losses to defeat Fiji before then falling, somewhat harshly, to Scotland in extra time.

Determined not to follow suit this year and prepared to take some medicine in advance of, rather than during, the 2009 tournament, the current U-20 squad embarked on a recent two-week trip to New Zealand, playing the Development XVs from Wellington, Taranaki and Hawkes Bay.

Sanctioning

Many British Columbia  schools travel outside of the province to compete, and also host schools from across Canada, from the United States and from overseas. To ensure that this competition is approved or conducted by secondary school authorities and that it is fair and equitable, sanctioning policies have been developed by all Provincial School Sport Associations in Canada and State Associations in the United States.

BC SCHOOL SPORTS Policies and Procedures with respect to sanctioning of tours (both incoming and outgoing), as well as the required forms, can be downloaded as follows:

There may be situations where the rugby jurisdictions outside of Canada either sending a team to, or hosting a team from, British Columbia may require the approval of the BC Rugby Union and/or Rugby Canada.  If this is the case, please review the information below, then complete and submit the required documentation as directed.

The forms listed above require the use of Adobe Reader which is a free program that can be downloaded here.

Important Notice to All Senior-Level High School Rugby Coaches

The BC Secondary Schools’ Rugby Union will follow the policy adopted by the BC Rugby Union, and apply all Experimental Law Variations (ELVs) to all school games at the senior level – exhibition, league play, play-offs and Provincial Championship competition. This decision, effective March 2, involves all grades eleven and twelve players, as well as grade ten athletes competing for the first time at the senior level. Coaches are urged to ensure that grade ten players in particular are made aware of these rules, as this coming season is most likely the first time they will play under all of them. A detailed outline of the IRB Experimental Law Variations can be downloaded from the Resources page of this website.
