2008 Derek Hyde-Lay Memorial Scholarships

Two of the BCSSRU scholarships presented each year are dedicated to the memory of Derek Hyde-Lay who taught and coached at  Shawnigan Lake School for a period of forty-five years.  His contribution to school rugby in the province is equalled by few.

Rugby

  • Captain of his school teams for five years
  • Captain of club and representative teams in Victoria at the U-16, U-18 and U-19 levels
  • Captain of the BC U-16  team in 2006, and the BC U-18 team in both 2007 and 2008
  • Captain of the Canada U-17 team in 2007
  • Selected for the Canada U-20 tour to New Zealand this past February/March

General Athletic Awards

Andrew is presently enrolled in the BMOS (Business) Program in the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Western Ontario, and maintains his involvement with rugby.


Graeme Martin-Muir Hugh McRoberts

From the start of his five-year involvement with rugby at high school, Graeme was noted for his athleticism, strength and speed, the ability to adapt to playing situations with foresight and sound decision making, as well as the ability to ably fill all positions in the back-line from standoff to fullback.  His participation was not limited to the school program.  He was an active member of the Richmond Rugby Club, which won a Provincial U-16 title in 2006.

Outside of rugby, Graeme was actively involved within the school as a peer helper and as a senior member of the Grad Legacy Committee which promoted awareness of, and fundraising for ,  spinal cord research.  Within the community at large, he dedicated much time to coaching youth soccer.

Graeme is a member of the BCRU Vancouver Intermediary Rugby Academy, and is enrolled in the Faculty of Arts at the University of British Columbia.
