Graduates from Kalamalka and Esquimalt Awarded 2008 BCSSRU Scholarships

Below are profiles of the two students awarded scholarships sponsored by x-treme Rugbywear Ltd, the official BCCSRU athletic supplier.

Michael Cestas   Kalamalka

A long-time stalwart of the Kalamalka program, Michael was described by his coach as an ‘outstanding team member both on and off the field’.  He showed a great ability to read the game and make the right decisions, even in adverse conditions.  He also worked tirelessly on team projects, fund-raising activities and assisted with the development of younger players.

In addition to rugby, Michael filled a leadership role in school football as well as community baseball and soccer.  His strong commitment to academic excellence, athletic involvement and broad-based community service was recognized by his selection as Valedictorian for the Class of 2008.  Michael is presently enrolled in the Bachelor of Business Administration program at Okanagan College.  He has decided to exercise the option of deferring his scholarship for one academic year.

Daniel Smith   Esquimalt
Dan was involved with the rugby program at Esquimalt for four years, which included three at the senior level.  As a sportsman, he demonstrated all of the qualities one expects to see in a highly competitive athlete.  He played with commitment, and always showed a mature respect for the laws and ethics of the game.

Within the community-at-large, Dan gave outstanding service.  With his proactive personality, he was always willing to take on any task in an attempt to contribute.  Dan plans to attend Camosun College to complete pre-requisite courses for entry into the Architectural Science program at the BC Institute of Technology.
