Meet Two of the 2008 BCSSRU Scholarship Winners





Throughout the 2009 season we will feature past recipients of a BCSSRU Scholarship.  The first two athletes profiled are Cameron Ballard from Rockridge and Liam Murray from Collingwood.

Cameron Ballard Rockridge
BC Secondary Schools’ Rugby Union Scholarship

Throughout his five years at Rockridge, Cam excelled academically and athletically.  His rugby accomplishments are impressive.  He was a key component of every team from Grade 8 through to the Senior XV.  He represented BC at three National Championships at the U-16 and U-18 levels. He was selected to play for Canada on two U-17 tours to the Millfield Rugby Festival in England, and made two appearances at the 2006 Churchill Cup tournament.  At the club level, he was a starting member of the U-19 side that won the Provincial Championship.  In the words of Perino Zambon, his Rockridge coach, “Cam demonstrated a work ethic that allowed him to be a leader on the practice field as well as in games.  His mentoring of younger players provided a further example of his strong commitment to his school and its rugby program”.

Currently a member of the BC Intermediary Rugby Academy, Cam is enrolled at the University of Victoria where he balances his studies in engineering with playing for the Division 1 ‘Norsemen’.

Liam Murray Collingwood
BC Secondary Schools’ Rugby Union Scholarship

A multi-talented athlete at Collingwood, Liam was respected for his achievements in swimming, wrestling and rugby.  Of these, rugby was his passion.  Co-Captain of the school 1st  Both teams won the gold medal. XV, he was also an integral member of the Capilano RFC age-grade program, and was selected to represent BC at the U-18 level in 2007 and 2008. In the words of Lisa Evans, Head of the Senior School at Collingwood, “Liam showed a good balance of academic achievement, volunteerism and leadership at school, coaching the younger students in all of the three sports with which he was involved, together with leading student retreats.  That made him an outstanding all-around role model”.

Liam is presently enrolled in the Faculty of Science at the University of Victoria where he has played for the ‘Jutes’ (U-19), and presently for the ‘Norsemen’ (Division 1).  He is a member of the BC Intermediary Rugby Academy, and was invited to trial for the National Sevens Program.
