The G. P. Vanier Towhees clinched the championship title at the BCSSRU Sevens 2010 tournament held at St. George’s School (Vancouver) on April 17 and 18.  The visitors from the Vancouver Island community of Courtenay, ranked sixth coming into the event, quickly established their credentials with impressive pool-play wins over Robert Bateman, Lord Tweedsmuir and Argyle.  The ‘Cup’ semi-final was a closer contest, but nevertheless a 22-12 victory over second-ranked Earl Marriott.  This set up a ‘Cup’ final with defending champions St. George’s which proved to be an entertaining and exciting display of Sevens rugby.  The final result!  A 28-17 first-ever championship for Vanier at this event!

The ‘Plate’ final was a close contest with the final decision going to Prince of Wales.  Kelowna Secondary claimed the ‘Bowl’ with an impressive win over West Vancouver and the ‘Shield’ travelled back to the Okanagan with the team from Rutland Senior Secondary.  Kelowna was also the well-deserved recipient of the Peter Clarke Trophy for the Most Sportsmanlike Team as judged by the referees.

A great venue!  (Mostly) great weather!  Great rugby!  Congratulations to everyone involved.
